The Hearing Check

(A quiet room at the hearing clinic. Nia sits in a big chair. Papa sits next to her.)

DR. RUIZ: Hi, Nia! I am Dr. Ruiz. I am an audiologist. That means I check how well people hear.

NIA: Will it hurt?

DR. RUIZ: Not one bit. First, I will look in your ears with this little light.

NIA: (giggles) That tickles!

DR. RUIZ: Next, put on these soft headphones. You will hear some beeps. Some will be loud, and some will be very soft. Raise your hand each time you hear one.

PAPA: You are so brave, Nia.

(Nia listens carefully. Beep! She raises her hand. Beep! Up goes her hand once more.)

DR. RUIZ: Great job! Your ears are working well. You can take off the headphones now.

NIA: Can I come back next year and do it again?

DR. RUIZ: (laughs) Yes, you can!
