The Playground Treasure Chest

A playground treasure hunt ends at a chest of colorful material samples. Before hiding them again, the play leader checks that they are safe to handle. The group looks at colors and gently feels surfaces. They press each sample with the same gentle push. A soft sample dents; a hard sample stays firm. They gently try to bend each sample without forcing it. The sample changes, but the tests stay the same. They record these clues.

A: Orange sponge. Rough texture. Soft. Bends easily.

B: Purple sponge. Rough texture. Soft. Bends easily.

C: Green felt. Fuzzy texture. Soft. Bends easily.

D: Orange wood piece. Rough texture. Hard. Stays straight in the bend test.

E: Purple thick plastic disk. Smooth texture. Hard. Stays straight in the bend test.

F: Green thin plastic strip. Smooth texture. Hard. Bends easily.

G: Orange rubber sheet. Smooth texture. Soft. Bends easily.

H: Purple felt. Fuzzy texture. Soft. Bends easily.
