The Bridge Walkway Material Journal

Use field notes to sort materials by their properties.

Read the field journal

Jordan walked along a city bridge walkway with an adult helper. Over several days, Jordan observed sample pieces that might be useful for walkway signs and markers. Use the journal notes to answer the questions.

Jordan's Field Journal

Day 1: I looked at four samples near the walkway table. Sample A was red, smooth, hard, and stayed straight when gently bent. Sample B was red, rough, soft, and bent easily. Sample C was blue, smooth, soft, and bent easily. Sample D was blue, rough, hard, and stayed straight.

Day 2: I observed four more samples. Sample E was yellow, smooth, hard, and bent easily. Sample F was yellow, rough, soft, and stayed straight. Sample G was green, smooth, soft, and stayed straight. Sample H was green, rough, hard, and bent easily.

Day 3: I wrote the observations in groups. The color groups were red, blue, yellow, and green. For the other properties, I used the words smooth or rough, hard or soft, and bends easily or stays straight. These notes describe what happened in the gentle tests; they do not tell which material is best for every job.
