A Supply Bench Investigation

Esme's class visits the supply bench at a lake swimming dock. An adult gives them seven safe material samples. They look at color and feel each surface for texture. They press each sample with the same gentle push, then try a gentle bend. They record dents and bends without forcing a sample. In these tests, a sample that dents is called soft; one that does not dent is called hard. Flexibility tells how easily a sample bends.

Foam strip: blue; smooth; dents; bends easily.

Towel square: white; bumpy; dents; bends easily.

Sponge piece: yellow; bumpy; dents; bends easily.

Plastic tile: blue; smooth; does not dent; does not bend.

Thin plastic strip: white; smooth; does not dent; bends easily.

Wood block: brown; rough; does not dent; does not bend.

Foam pad: blue; bumpy; dents; bends easily.
