Sorting Samples at the Rocky Coast Lighthouse

Use observations to sort lighthouse materials by their properties.

A lighthouse crew gathered six samples from a supply box. Read the notes and use the pictures to sort the samples.

Notes from the Rocky Coast Lighthouse

At a lighthouse on a rocky coast, Lena and Jorge prepared a small display about materials. They gathered a shell, rope, rock, flag, can, and boot. They looked at each sample and touched its surface. Then they gently pressed each sample to see whether it dented. Finally, they gently bent each sample to see whether it bent easily or stayed straight.

Their notes said: The shell was white, smooth, hard, and stayed straight. The rope was gray, rough, soft, and bent easily. The rock was gray, rough, hard, and stayed straight. The flag was red, smooth, soft, and bent easily. The can was silver, smooth, hard, and stayed straight. The boot was black, bumpy, hard, and bent easily.
