Water Reports at the Corner Newsstand

Use neighborhood records to find water and compare its forms.

Read the Neighborhood Records

Read the table with an adult. Use the records to answer each question.

A Water Report Board

At a busy corner newsstand, neighbors stop for papers before catching the streetcar. The owner, Inez, gives a class space for a water report board. An adult photographer visits six nearby places on Monday and again on Friday. The table records what the photographs show. Each row names one place, and each day has its own column.

Ice and snow are solid water. Liquid water can flow and form puddles. Some photographs may show more than one form of water. A photograph also leaves things out: it does not show everything nearby. Read what each record says rather than guessing about parts that are hidden.

Place | Monday record | Friday record
Harbor at the ocean | Waves move between boats. | Waves move between boats.
Canal | Water flows beside pieces of ice. | Water flows; no ice is visible.
Flat roof | Snow covers the roof. | A puddle covers part of the roof.
Sidewalk | A puddle fills a low spot. | A puddle fills the same low spot.
Below the street | Liquid water is drawn from a well. | Liquid water is drawn from the well.
Pond surface | Hard ice covers the surface. | Liquid water ripples at the surface.
