The Feeder Sign Project

Talia and Marcus are building a small sign beside a backyard bird feeder. They want the sign to help visitors notice water in different places. They collect water cards from a science book and compare them with things they can observe safely in the yard.

Their cards say this: A birdbath holds water above the ground. A well has water below the ground. A pond has water above the ground. A glacier is a large mass of ice on land. Snow can rest on a roof or on the ground. The cards remind the team that ice and snow are solid water, while water that can flow and be poured is liquid water.

The team also checks a shallow dish near the feeder. In the morning, a thin layer of ice covers some water in the dish. In the afternoon, the ice is gone and water is pooled in the dish. The team records what it sees instead of guessing from the name of a place.
