  • Students use observations to distinguish changes to an object from changes to its pieces.

How to use

A Challenge at the Science Museum

Read the challenge. Use the details to choose each answer.

Six Cubes, One New Model

At a science museum, visitors try a building challenge beside a robot display. A small model robot is made from six blue plastic cubes. Each cube is the same size. The cubes snap together. A museum helper gently pulls two joined cubes apart. Both cubes stay whole. The helper snaps them together again.

The challenge is to take apart the model robot and build a different model. Visitors may use the six cubes from the robot. They may not add cubes, break cubes, or leave any cubes unused. Two plan cards show choices: model steps and a model gate. Each cube picture on a card stands for one cube. After choosing a plan, visitors will build it and check their work. The helper puts an empty tray nearby to hold loose cubes.
