From Pack Pad to Camp Path

Follow small pieces as a camper takes apart and rebuilds a model.

Study the Camping Models

Read the passage and study the pictures. Each shaded square stands for one panel. White squares are empty spaces, not panels.

Tessa's Camping Plans

On a camping trip, Tessa makes small models on a picnic table. She is planning a place to set backpacks and a path beside a tent. Her building kit has ten small square panels. The panels hook together along their edges. Each panel has a number on its back, from 1 through 10.

First, Tessa hooks the ten panels together to model a pad for backpacks. Then she pulls gently at the joins until the panels are loose. She spreads them on a tray and checks their numbers. She finds each number from 1 through 10.

Next, Tessa hooks the panels together to model a path with a bend. She uses the pieces from the tray without bringing in new ones. She checks the backs of the panels again. The numbers are still 1 through 10. The panels have no broken edges and are still the same size and shape.
