About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students use model pictures and a data table to track pieces during a rebuild.
  • Students explain how the same small pieces can be taken apart and joined to make different objects.
  • Students plan a rebuild that reuses the original pieces without adding or removing pieces.

How to use

Read the zoo observations together. Explain the table headings and that each picture square represents one tile, then ask students to support their answers with observations.

Tile Rebuilds at Flamingo Lagoon

Use model pictures and a build record to track the same small pieces.

Study the Model Records

Read the observations and table. Each small square in a model picture stands for one tile.

At the Flamingo Lagoon Activity Table

At the zoo's flamingo lagoon, visitors build tiny models at an activity table. These models stay on the table, away from the animals. Nia chooses twelve square tiles that snap together. Each tile has a different letter on its back, from A through L.

Nia joins the tiles to make a model floor mat. Then she unsnaps the joins and spreads the loose tiles on a tray. She does not cut or bend them. She joins the loose tiles into a model sign. The sign lies flat so visitors can see its shape.

A helper checks the sign. Its tiles still have the letters A through L. Their sizes and shapes have not changed. Later, Nia takes the sign apart and starts a model bench top. The table records her work.

Nia's Build Record
Object | Tiles joined in object | Loose tiles on tray
Floor mat | 12 | 0
Sign | 12 | 0
Unfinished bench top | 9 | 3
