Dear Uncle Mateo

Last Saturday, our apartment block held a mural day. The old wall beside the entrance had faded paint and bits of litter nearby. I volunteered to help. I picked up litter, sorted brushes, and carried water for the painters. Neighbors of many ages came to work together.

At the busy corner, the crossing signal showed DON'T WALK. Our city's crossing law says people wait for WALK and use the marked crosswalk. I waited with my neighbor until WALK appeared. A driver stopped for us at the red light.

At the wall, people suggested colors for the mural. We listened to one another and took turns using the paint. We did not paint over another person's part. We also made room on the sidewalk for a neighbor using a wheelchair.

When the work was done, we put the brushes away and placed litter in bins. The wall looked brighter, and the sidewalk was clear. I hope our neighbors can work together on another project soon.Love, Sofia
