Under the Mossy Log
After a rainy night, Amara and her cousin Felipe went for a walk in the woods with Aunt June. Soon they found an old log lying beside the path. Soft green moss covered the top of it. Amara pressed the moss with one finger. "It feels squishy, like a sponge!" she said.
Aunt June helped them roll the log over very slowly. The dirt underneath was damp and cool. A shiny slug was sliding across a leaf. It left a slimy trail behind it. "I will just look at that one," said Felipe.
Next to the slug, a fuzzy caterpillar was curled up in a ball. Aunt June said that some caterpillars can make your skin itch, so they only looked at it. Close by lay a seed pod covered in sharp points. It looked prickly, so nobody picked it up.
Dry leaves crunched under their boots as they walked around the log. Felipe rubbed his hand over the bark. "It is rough and bumpy," he said. When they were done, they gently rolled the log back. Now the slug and the caterpillar had their dark, damp home again.
