The Evening Hayride

On a cool fall evening, Odette and Uncle Rami climbed onto a wagon full of hay. The hay was prickly, and it poked through Odette's socks.

Two big horses pulled the wagon down a bumpy dirt road. Bump, bump, bump! The old wheels were squeaky, and they squealed with every turn.

The wind was chilly, so Uncle Rami pulled a cozy wool blanket over their knees. Dry leaves on the road were crunchy under the wheels.

At the end of the ride, they each got a cup of steamy cocoa and a sticky caramel apple. Odette licked her fingers and smiled. "That was the best ride," she said.
