About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students match parts of a seed-moving model to seeds, animal fur, and an animal's path.
  • Students compare test results to explain how animals can carry hooked seeds.
  • Students improve a model to show seeds being dropped in a new place.

How to use

Read the investigation together and trace the model's trip with a finger. Have students use the graph as evidence, then discuss how to add seed release to the model.

Seed Travelers at the Lake Ferry

Build and test a model of seeds riding on animal fur.

A Lakeshore Model

Read about the class test. Think about what each model part stands for.

From the Tray to the Far End

A class visited a ferry shelter beside a lake. Near the path, they noticed dry seed cases with tiny hooks. A dog walked past the plants. Some seed cases caught in its fur. The class built a model back at school.

They used two cardboard animal shapes of the same size. They covered one with fuzzy felt and the other with smooth paper. Small hook-and-loop craft tabs stood for the hooked seed cases.

Step 1: Put eight tabs, hook side up, in marked spots on a tray. Lay a 30-centimeter paper path beside the tray.

Step 2: Press the felt-covered animal onto the tabs once with a gentle push. Lift it and carry it above the path to the far end.

Step 3: Count the tabs still attached. Remove them. Put eight tabs back in the same starting spots.

Step 4: Test the paper-covered animal the same way. Keep the push and path length the same. Repeat both tests. Record the results.
