Dressed for the Job Site

1A building site is a busy place. Big machines dig, lift and dump. Workers carry boards, pipes and tools. To stay safe, construction workers wear special gear from head to toe.

2A hard hat protects a worker's head if something falls from above. The outside of most hard hats is made of hard plastic. Straps inside the hat keep it from sitting right on the head.

3Bright orange or yellow vests are easy to spot in the daytime. Drivers of trucks and diggers need to know where every worker is standing. Shiny stripes on the vest shine when light hits them.

4Workers also protect their eyes, hands and feet. Safety glasses keep dust out of their eyes. Thick gloves guard their hands against sharp edges. Many work boots have a hard cap over the toes.

The Pictures (described in words)

Picture 1: A worker stands next to a digger. Lines point to six labels: hard hat, safety glasses, earmuffs, vest, gloves and work boots. The earmuffs hang around the worker's neck. The caption says, "Earmuffs block loud noise from the machines."

Picture 2: A hard hat is drawn cut in half, so you can see inside it. Straps cross inside the hat and rest on the worker's head. An arrow points to the gap between the top of the head and the hard outside of the hat. This gap is labeled space.

Picture 3: It is night. A truck's headlights shine on a worker. Most of the worker is hard to see, but the stripes on the vest glow bright white.
