The Gingerbread Gate

On a cold Saturday, Nia and Grandpa made a gingerbread house at the kitchen counter. Grandpa mixed a bowl of thick white icing. Nia set out candy and gumdrops.

First, they stood up the four walls and pressed them into the icing. Next, Nia put a row of cereal on the roof. Grandpa used pretzel sticks to make a little fence around the yard.

"Our house needs a gate," said Nia. She cut a gingerbread square into a gate. It looked giant next to the tiny house! Grandpa gave her a cinnamon candy for the handle.

At last, they set the house in the center of the table. Nia sprinkled sugar on the roof so it sparkled like ice. "It is perfect," said Grandpa. "Let's take a picture before the cat finds it!"
