Forty Feet on the Way to Music

Read a poem and use plurals like feet, people and women.

Read the poem

Read the poem out loud. Listen for words that name more than one.

Forty Feet

1Twenty children, two by two,
walk to music, Room 102.
Forty feet go tap, tap, tap,
down the hall and past the map.

2"Quiet as mice!" Ms. Lee likes to say.
"Not loud as geese that honk all day!"
We close our lips and hide our teeth
and tiptoe on the tiles beneath.

3We pass the gym. Some people there
are stacking chairs with lots of care.
A first-grade class comes walking by.
We do not talk. We just wave hi.

4Two men on ladders fix a light.
Two women paint a wall bright white.
They smile and nod as we pass through,
then on we go to Room 102.

5At last we reach the music door.
We are not quiet anymore!
We stamp our feet and sing out loud,
twenty children, one big crowd.
