Ferns Three Ways: Find Each Author's Purpose

Three short texts about ferns, each written for a different reason.

Read the three texts

Three authors each wrote about ferns. As you read, think about why each author wrote.

Text 1: Feathery Green Leaves

A fern is a green plant. Most ferns have feathery leaves. Each leaf is called a frond. On many ferns, a frond has rows of small leaf parts on both sides of its stem. A new frond starts out rolled up tight. It looks like the curly top of a violin, so people call it a fiddlehead.

Text 2: From Tiny Dots

Ferns do not make flowers or seeds. Instead, new ferns grow from spores. Spores are as tiny as specks of dust. On many ferns, they form in little brown dots under the fronds. When the spores are ready, the wind carries them away. If a spore lands on damp ground, it can grow into a tiny, flat plant. Later, a new fern sprouts from it.

Text 3: A Cool, Shady Home

Where do ferns grow? Many ferns grow best in places that are shady and damp. You can often find them on the forest floor under tall trees. Some ferns grow along the banks of streams. A few kinds even grow high up on tree branches. So the next time you walk in a cool, wet forest, look around for ferns!
