Cleaning Day
Nia and Uncle Theo have a cleaning day every spring. This year, Uncle Theo handed Nia a broom and a dustpan. Nia swept the crumbs on the kitchen floor into a little pile. Then she pushed the pile onto the dustpan and dumped it in the wastebasket.
Next, Nia carried the doormat to the porch. She shook it hard, and a cloud of dirt flew off. Uncle Theo moved the flowerpot away from the window and swept up some soil that had spilled out of it.
In the living room, Nia found a lost sock under the armchair. She found two marbles behind the footstool. Uncle Theo wiped the dust off the lampshade, and the lamp seemed to glow a little brighter.
Last, they washed the lunch dishes. Nia scrubbed each plate with a soapy dishcloth, and Uncle Theo dried them. Then Nia sat in the armchair and rested her feet on the footstool. "Housework is hard work," she said, "but now the whole place sparkles!"
