Notes from the Wildlife Watch

A class watched animals from a window at Summit Pine Ski Lodge. The children stayed inside and did not approach the animals. They wrote what changed and what happened next.

On one morning, a snow-grooming machine started. A mother mountain goat turned toward a rocky ledge. Her kid followed close behind. When the machine stopped, the mother moved out from the ledge, and the kid followed her again.

On another morning, the kid gave a short call. The mother stopped and looked back. The kid walked close to her. Then the mother led the kid to shrubs. The mother ate while the kid stayed beside her.

The class also watched a ptarmigan hen and her chicks. When a large bird's shadow crossed the snow, the hen gave a soft call. The chicks crouched under a low spruce while the hen stayed nearby. When the shadow was gone, the hen walked, and the chicks followed her.
