The Paddock Camera

A class watches farm videos of two horse families in a paddock, a fenced field. Fern and Rose are mother horses. Each has a foal, a young horse.

Step 1: Watch each family in the morning. Step 2: Record what the mother and foal do. Step 3: Repeat on two more mornings. The class changes the day it watches, but watches the same families. No one changes what the horses do.

On each morning, Fern's foal nudges her side with its nose. Fern stands still. The foal drinks her milk. Rose's foal nudges her side, too. Rose stands still, and her foal drinks milk.

1.
What does a foal's nudge seem to tell its mother?
  • A. The foal wants to run.
  • B. The foal wants some milk.
  • C. The foal wants a dry spot.
  • D. The foal wants to sleep.
2.
