A Letter from 1908

July 14, 1908 Dear Cousin Bea, Mama and I rode a cable car to the market in San Francisco. I held a paper ticket. The gripman used a lever to catch the moving cable under the street. A bell rang at our stop. The car carried us up a steep hill. Mama bought fruit, and we rode home before supper. Love, Elena

Artifact: Elena's paper ticket has a cable car picture and the words “one ride.” The date 1908 is printed on it.

Old photograph: A cable car is filled with riders. A worker stands at its front. Riders wear hats and coats.

Family story: “Our family often walked to nearby places. For longer trips, we waited for a streetcar. We did not own a car.”
