What students practice

  • Students name the author and the illustrator of a book, even when one person does both jobs.
  • Students tell what an author's words tell and what an illustrator's pictures show.
  • Students use a book cover to name who wrote a book and who illustrated it.

How to use

Read the text aloud twice. If you can, show a real book whose author also drew the pictures. Read each question and its choices aloud, then let students circle, write, match and tell a partner.

A Visit From a Book Maker

Kofi Mensah came to our class. He made a book called Chameleon Colors. Our teacher, Ms. Lopez, read it to us.

Kofi wrote the words, so he is the author. He drew the pictures, too, so he is also the illustrator.

His words tell that a chameleon can change color. They tell that it catches bugs with its long tongue.

His pictures show a green chameleon on a branch. They show its eyes looking two ways at once.
