A Moving Shadow

At the backyard birdbath, Imani checks water, a flat rock, and bare soil. An adult uses a thermometer. They check the same spots twice.

First, the spots are in fence shade. Later, sunlight reaches them. A second rock stays in shade for both checks. They record how warm each spot is. They leave the water, soil, and rocks in place. They do not touch hot surfaces.

First check: All four spots are cool.
The adult records the starting temperature at each spot.
Picture of a sunSecond check: Sunlight reaches three spots.
Birdbath water: warmer than at the first check.
Flat rock: warmer than at the first check.
Bare soil: warmer than at the first check.
