About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students experimentally check that translations, reflections, and rotations preserve segment lengths.
  • Students use tracings and straightedges to check that rigid motions take lines to lines.

How to use

Provide tracing paper, a ruler, and a straightedge. Have students perform the indicated moves before comparing their observations with the recorded results.

Curriculum

Common Core standard covered

8.G.A.1.a

Check by experiment that rotations, reflections, and translations move lines to lines and segments to equal-length segments.

Skate and Climb Gym: Template Tests

Test straight lines and segment lengths as gym templates move.

Membership Templates

Use tracing paper and a straightedge to investigate the templates. Grid intervals represent 1 unit. Do not resize a tracing.

1.
The gym moves a membership-card template. Each trial checks a straight guide line and a separate 4.6 cm segment. Which record passes both the straight-line check and the equal-length check?

  • A. The slide then turn passes both checks.
  • B. The flip passes both checks.
  • C. The slide passes both checks.
  • D. The turn passes both checks.
2.
A ruler reads 1.3 cm at one end of a membership-card divider and 6.1 cm at the other end. After a translation, its image starts at the ruler's 2.2 cm mark. The image extends toward larger ruler readings.

For equal lengths, the other image endpoint must be at the   cm mark.

3.
A segment on a membership sign runs from C to D. Trace it. Keep C fixed and rotate the tracing 90° counterclockwise about C. Draw the complete image segment. Label its endpoints C′ and D′. Compare the two segments using a paper strip marked at both endpoints.−5−4−3−2−1123450−5−4−3−2−112345CD
