About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students check experimentally that translations, reflections, and rotations preserve segment lengths.
  • Students use traced points and straightedges to check that rigid transformations move lines to lines.

How to use

Provide tracing paper, a ruler, and a straightedge. Students trace, slide, flip, and turn layouts, then compare their observations with the recorded results.

Curriculum

Common Core standard covered

8.G.A.1.a

Check by experiment that rotations, reflections, and translations move lines to lines and segments to equal-length segments.

Music Festival: Layout Motion Lab

Test straight lines and segment lengths as festival layouts move.

Ticket Layout Tests

Use tracing paper to test the moves. A translation slides without turning; a reflection flips; a rotation turns. Do not resize a tracing. Grid intervals represent 1 layout unit.

1.
A straight divider on a festival ticket measures 7.5 cm. Trace a segment of this length on paper. Turn the tracing through a quarter turn, and compare the two segments by laying one over the other.

What length should the rotated divider have?   cm

2.
A ticket's straight tear guide is reflected. A volunteer compares the original and image with a paper strip marked at both endpoints. Which result supports equal segment lengths?
  • A. Both image endpoints lie beyond the two strip marks.
  • B. Both image endpoints match the two strip marks exactly.
  • C. One image endpoint matches a strip mark, but the other extends past.
  • D. One image endpoint matches a strip mark, but the other falls short.
3.
Segment AB is a slanted edge of a ticket-sales sign. Draw the horizontal mirror line y = 1. Trace AB, then flip the tracing across that line. Draw the complete image segment and label A′ and B′.−5−4−3−2−1123450−5−4−3−2−112345AB
