About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students rewrite subtraction of rational numbers as addition of the opposite.
  • Students find the distance between two rational numbers using the absolute value of their difference.
  • Students distinguish signed changes from distances in step and heart-rate logs.

How to use

Have students write an addition-of-the-opposite equation beside each subtraction. Review why a signed change can be negative but a distance cannot.

Curriculum

Common Core standard covered

7.NS.A.1.c

Understand subtracting as adding the opposite, and see the distance between two numbers as the absolute value of their difference.

Fitness Tracker: Signed Gaps

Use opposites and absolute values to compare step and heart-rate logs.

Subtract with Opposites

A step gap is steps logged minus the step goal. A heart-rate offset is heart rate minus a reference rate. Negative values mean below the goal or reference, not negative steps or heartbeats.

1.
A tracker's step gap changes from −140 steps to 85 steps. Which expression rewrites the signed change, 85 − (−140), as addition?
  • A. −85 + 140
  • B. −140 + (−85)
  • C. 85 + (−140)
  • D. 85 + 140
2.
For two walking intervals, the tracker records heart-rate offsets of −9 and −16 beats per minute. Find the first offset minus the second.

−9 − (−16) = −9 +   =   beats per minute

3.
A heart-rate offset changes from 6.5 to −2.5 beats per minute. Calculate the signed change: later offset minus earlier offset.

−2.5 − 6.5 =   beats per minute
