About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students estimate probabilities using relative frequencies from repeated random draws.
  • Students describe how relative frequencies behave as the number of trials increases.
  • Students use experimental probability estimates to predict counts in future trials.

How to use

Have students work through the recorded drawing experiment, then compare their predictions with the reported results. Discuss why a prediction is not a guarantee.

Curriculum

Common Core standard covered

7.SP.C.6

Estimate a probability by running a chance process many times and watching its relative frequency, then predict results.

Student Newspaper: Opinion Draws

Use repeated random draws to estimate probabilities and plan a quote display.

Draw from the Survey Archive

The student newspaper surveyed opinions about a longer lunch period. Each response card says support, oppose, or unsure. For each trial, an editor mixes the cards, randomly draws one, records its category, and returns it. Estimate chances for this drawing process, not for all students at the school.

1.
Why does the editor return the response card before the next trial?
  • A. Returning it prevents that response from being selected again.
  • B. Returning it makes the three opinion categories equally likely.
  • C. Returning it makes the next result match the previous result.
  • D. Returning it keeps the collection unchanged for the next draw.
2.
The editors complete 240 trials. Every draw belongs to exactly one category.
