About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students estimate event probabilities using relative frequencies from repeated chance trials.
  • Students examine how running relative frequencies change as the number of trials increases.
  • Students use experimental probability estimates to predict counts and plan future trials.

How to use

Have students calculate estimates from the trial records before making production predictions. Discuss why a scaled recipe needs its own trial evidence.

Curriculum

Common Core standard covered

7.SP.C.6

Estimate a probability by running a chance process many times and watching its relative frequency, then predict results.

Bakery Prep: Test the Scaled Recipe

Use repeated scoop trials to estimate probabilities and plan for a school event.

Read the Scoop Trials

A bakery is scaling a berry-muffin recipe for a school event. The number of berries in a scoop varies by chance. Write probability estimates as decimals.

For each trial, a baker mixes the batter, takes one level scoop, and counts its berries. The scoop is returned before the batter is mixed again. The recipe, scoop size, and mixing procedure stay unchanged during each test. A scoop with exactly 2 or 3 berries meets the bakery's berry target.
1.
Which plan would give the most useful estimate of the probability that one scoop meets the berry target?
  • A. Take many scoops and record only those meeting the target.
  • B. Take many scoops, increasing the scoop size each time.
  • C. Take many scoops using the procedure and record every result.
  • D. Take one scoop and use its result as the probability.
2.
The bakery records its first 100 trials with the original recipe.
