  • Students distinguish repeated values, missing entries, and duplicate records when counting observations.

How to use

Use for independent practice after defining an observation. Have students mark what each record represents before counting, then discuss the final record-audit explanation.

Class Trip Budget: Count the Records

Report how many observations are in each budget data set.

Read the Budget Records

An observation is one recorded value for the quantity being studied. Treat each question as a separate data set. Count repeated values unless a record is identified as an accidental copy.

1.
The class collects bus rental quotes from several companies. Each listed quote is one observation. Quotes in dollars: 465, 490, 465, 520, 505, 480, 490, 515, 500.

How many observations are in the quote data set?

2.
Six students report the amount they plan to spend on lunch: $8, $10, $8, $12, $10, $8. Which statement correctly reports the number of observations?
  • A. There are 12 observations, equal to the largest amount.
  • B. There are 56 observations, equal to the amounts added.
  • C. There are 6 observations, one for each student's report.
  • D. There are 3 observations, one for each different amount.
3.
A small planning group records how much each student has already paid toward a museum ticket. A payment of $0 is a recorded value, not a missing entry.
