About this worksheet
What students practice
- Students describe the center, spread, and overall shape of late-return distributions.
- Students interpret data displays to make decisions and evaluate statistical summaries.
- Students explain why a distribution's center may fall where few or no observations occur.
How to use
Use after introducing histograms and box plots. Have students annotate the displays, then discuss why a useful summary includes more than a typical value.
Curriculum
Common Core standard covered
Understand that a set of data has a distribution that can be described by its center, spread, and overall shape.

City Library: Late-Return Patterns
Use center, spread, and shape to describe late-return records.
1. Returned Books
The city library recorded how many whole days late 20 books were returned. Each histogram interval includes its left endpoint but not its right endpoint. Use this histogram for questions 1–5.
- A. The records cluster near 9–10 days, with a tail toward shorter delays.
- B. The records cluster at short delays, with a tail toward longer delays.
- C. The records are spread evenly, with similar counts in all intervals.
- D. The records form two equal clusters, separated by an empty interval.
- A. The median is at least 1 day but less than 3 days.
- B. The median is exactly 6 days because the axis runs from 1 to 11.
- C. The median is exactly 3 days because the second bar starts at 3.
- D. The median is at least 3 days but less than 5 days.
