About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students report the number of observations in raw data lists, frequency tables, and histograms.
  • Students distinguish the number of observations from data values and the number of distinct values.
  • Students count observations when records include zeros, repeated measurements, or missing entries.

How to use

Use after introducing observations and frequency tables. Have students identify what each observation represents before counting, then discuss the final record-checking task.

Recycling Drive: Count the Observations

Report the size of a data set, not the amount collected.

Read the Collection Records

An observation is one recorded value in the data set being studied. Count repeated values separately. A recorded zero counts; a missing value does not.

1.
Volunteers record the number of cans in each donated bag: 14, 18, 14, 22, 16, 18, 14, 20, 16. Each bag provides one observation.

How many observations are in this data set?

2.
The bottle station records the number of donations during six collection periods: 0, 3, 3, 0, 5, 2. How many observations are recorded?
  • A. There are 5 observations.
  • B. There are 13 observations.
  • C. There are 6 observations.
  • D. There are 4 observations.
3.
Each row represents one paper bundle. Volunteers want to summarize the recorded bundle masses. “Missing” means no mass was recorded.
