  • Students review their own writing and explain an editing strategy they used.

How to use

Review the Draft

This student sports report contains intentional language errors. For publication, use standard written English. Everyday speech can vary by setting; focus on revising language, not judging speakers.

A Final Decided by a Pass

1The girls’ soccer final between Ridge School and Valley School ended with Ridge ahead, two goals to one. Student reporter Dalia watched from beside the halfway line. She recorded the score after each goal and marked several plays to review. Her first draft follows the action closely, but it still needs a language check before publication.

2A row of substitutes were standing beside the Ridge bench. The coach held a folded team sheet. Captain Zuri adjusted her shin guards near the touchline. Across the field, Valley players passed a ball in a tight circle.

3Valley scored first after a quick exchange of passes. Ridge answered before halftime when forward Maribel reached a loose ball near the goal. The goalkeeper had went toward the other side, leaving an opening. Maribel kept her shot low, and the teams entered halftime with one goal each. Dalia circled the moment in her notebook.

4Late in the second half, Zuri carried the ball toward the penalty area and then passes to Maribel. A defender moved across to block the shot. Instead of shooting, Maribel returned the ball to Zuri, who scored. The Ridge players celebrated enthusiastic, but they soon returned to their positions. There was still time for Valley to attack.

5After the final whistle, Dalia prepared a spoken recap for the school announcement. During rehearsal, she said, “Ridge didn’t waste no time getting back into position.” She paused because the sentence did not fit the standard English expected for the announcement. Before recording, she compared her notes with the score sheet and asked a classmate to listen. The classmate checked the sequence of events while Dalia checked the wording.
