A Pause on the Course
1On Saturday, Cedar Vale students brought their robot to a regional competition in a neighboring school's gym. Teams had to program machines to carry foam blocks through a marked course. Students could adjust their programs between rounds, but they could not touch a robot during a run. For seventh graders Zoya and Darius, the first round tested more than their programming.
2Their machine rolled past the starting line and lifted a block while spectators leaned toward the course. The robot stopped. A judge watched the timer beside the scoring table. Behind the boundary tape, Zoya held the controller against her chest and waited for the round to end.
3During the break, the partners examined the wheels, checked the battery, and reviewed the program. A wheel had caught the edge of a loose cable attached to the robot. Although Darius wanted to change the turning instructions, Zoya suggested securing the cable first. They made that single adjustment so they could tell whether it solved the problem.
4Before the next round began, the partners tested the robot in the practice area. It carried one block, turned cleanly, and returned to its starting point. “We needed a smaller change, not a whole new plan,” Darius told student reporter Farah. She recorded his words and asked what they would watch during the next run. Both students pointed to the cable.
5In the final round, the robot completed the course, but another team earned the highest score. Cedar Vale's students packed their equipment beside a page of notes for their next meeting. Farah photographed the marked-up page rather than arranging a picture around the scoreboard. Her report would describe the competition results and explain how one careful adjustment helped the partners finish.

- B. It speeds through several actions during the repair.
- C. It makes an interruption stand out within the action.
