About this worksheet
What students practice
- Students represent numerical data using histograms and box plots.
- Students read and check the positions, frequencies, and intervals in numerical data displays.
- Students explain what information is lost when histogram intervals are combined.
How to use
Use after introducing all three displays. Provide a ruler for the drawing tasks, and have students compare their displays with the original data.
Curriculum
Common Core standard covered
Show numerical data on a number line with dot plots, histograms, and box plots.

3D-Printing Club: Prototype Data Displays
Build and check displays of part measurements and printing times.
Connector Lengths
Use the dot plot for questions 1–4. Each X represents one printed connector.
What measurement is missing? mm
- A. Move one X from 10.5 mm to 10 mm.
- B. Move one X from 10 mm to 10.5 mm.
- C. Move both Xs at 10.5 mm to 10 mm.
- D. Add one X at 10 mm without removing an X.
How many connectors meet this requirement? connectors
- A. Place tick marks every 1 mm.
- B. Place tick marks every 0.5 mm.
- C. Place tick marks every 4 mm.
- D. Place tick marks every 2 mm.
Material and Printing Time
Build or read each histogram. An interval includes its left endpoint but not its right endpoint.
Draw a histogram with intervals 0–5, 5–10, 10–15, 15–20, and 20–25 grams. Label the horizontal axis “Filament mass (g)” and the vertical axis “Models.” Show a numbered frequency scale and touching bars.
How many jobs need a longer session? jobs
- A. The heights should be 7, 0, and 5.
- B. The heights should be 5, 4, and 1.
- C. The heights should be 2, 5, and 5.
- D. The heights should be 7, 4, and 1.
Model Heights
Use the median-of-halves method for quartiles: find the median, then find the median of each half of the ordered data.
Draw a box plot on an axis from 10 to 30 mm, marked every 1 mm. Include both whiskers, the box, and the median line. Label the axis “Spacer height (mm).”
- A. The left whisker from 20 to 28 mm represents it.
- B. The right whisker from 40 to 48 mm represents it.
- C. The box from 28 to 40 mm represents it.
- D. The full span from 20 to 48 mm represents it.
How many millimeters separate the two edges of the display-model box? mm
The left whisker ends at 40 mm.The median line stays at 32 mm.The box extends from 56 to 80 mm.The right whisker ends at 96 mm.The box extends from 40 to 96 mm.
- A. Move the box to 18–30 mm; move the whisker endpoints to 10 and 42 mm.
- B. Keep the box at 10–42 mm; move the median line to 30 mm.
- C. Move the box to 18–22 mm; move the whisker endpoints to 10 and 30 mm.
- D. Keep the box at 10–42 mm; move the whisker endpoints to 22 and 30 mm.
