Fundraiser Emails: Adding Emphasis
Use intensive pronouns to emphasize who takes action.

An intensive pronoun emphasizes a noun or pronoun: “We ourselves checked.” Removing it leaves the basic meaning intact. A reflexive pronoun acts as an object: “We reminded ourselves.”
Planning the Equipment Sale
1To: Davi; From: Zerin; Subject: Equipment sale responsibilities. Hi Davi, our used sports equipment sale is getting closer. We hope to raise enough money to replace the cracked benches beside the school courts. Before we ask classmates for donations, we need a plan for checking equipment, setting prices, and recording payments. We also need to explain which items we can accept.
2Selma herself wrote the donation guidelines after our planning meeting. Her draft lists basketballs, tennis rackets, and other equipment that students can inspect easily. The guidelines ask donors to clean items before bringing them in. We will send the list with Friday’s announcement. Selma also suggested leaving space on each label for a short description.
3I myself will check the price labels before the doors open. You could organize the payment table, since you suggested a simple way to record each purchase. Please ask the volunteers to introduce themselves when they arrive. Some students have signed up without knowing anyone else on the team. A brief welcome should make it easier to ask questions.
4To: Zerin; From: Davi; Subject: Re: Equipment sale responsibilities. Hi Zerin, I can organize the payment table. The volunteers themselves should choose their shifts rather than have us assign every time slot. Several students have practice that afternoon, so I will send a schedule with open spaces. We can review the completed schedule together on Wednesday.
5We ourselves should test the recording system before the sale. If a receipt gets misplaced, we need another way to check the amount paid. I will bring a sample record sheet to our meeting. Also, the folding table itself has a loose leg; we should request a different one. I would rather solve that problem before someone stacks equipment on it.
- A. It emphasizes the guidelines that Selma wrote.
- B. It emphasizes Selma as the person who wrote.
- C. It shows that Selma wrote something about herself.
- D. It replaces Selma as the subject of the sentence.
