About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students measure and compare total weight before and after matter changes shape or mixes.
  • Students graph measurement data and use evidence to explain why total weight stays the same in a closed setup.
  • Students identify how missing matter or an incomplete setup can change a scale reading.

How to use

Read the lighthouse investigation together, then have students make the graph and answer the evidence questions. Ask students to point to measurements when explaining their claims.

The Lighthouse Workroom Weight Trail

Measure and graph what happens when matter changes shape or mixes.

1. Follow the lighthouse investigation

Read the report and measurement record. Use the data to make a graph and answer the questions.

A Weight Check by the Rocky Coast

At a lighthouse on a rocky coast, a science club studies whether matter changes its total weight when its shape changes or when materials are mixed. The club uses a digital scale that measures in grams. For each test, students record every part of the setup before the change. They keep the setup closed when they need to track all of the matter.

First, Eliana places a thin sheet of foil in a sealed plastic bag and records its weight. She presses the foil into a tight ball without opening the bag. Next, Rowan puts dry sand and small shell pieces into a jar with a lid. He records the whole jar before gently rolling it so the materials mix. Last, Priya places water and salt in a capped bottle. She records the bottle before shaking it until the salt is no longer visible. The bottle stays capped during the test.

The students measure the same complete setup after each change. The foil looks different after pressing. The sand and shell pieces are spread through one mixture. The salt is no longer visible in the water. These observations show changes in appearance, so the club compares the scale readings to find out what happened to the total weight.

Lighthouse workroom measurement record
Test | Change | Weight before | Weight after
1 | Foil pressed into a ball in a sealed plastic bag | 18 g | 18 g
2 | Sand and shell pieces mixed in a closed jar | 124 g | 124 g
3 | Salt mixed into water in a capped bottle | 96 g | 96 g
1.
Make a paired bar graph of the three tests. Draw one bar for the weight before and one bar for the weight after each change. Label the vertical axis “Total weight (g)” from 0 to 140 by 20s. Add a title and a key.
