The Salsa Tasting on Juniper Street

Every August, the families on Juniper Street held a salsa tasting under the big maple tree. This year, Tobias and his Auntie Fern were entering for the very first time. All week, Tobias had chopped, stirred and tasted until the recipe seemed just right. Their salsa had tomatoes from the windowsill, a squeeze of lime, and one tiny orange pepper that Auntie Fern called "the surprise."

"Just one pepper?" Tobias asked. "Won't anyone notice it?"

Auntie Fern grinned. "Oh, they'll notice," she whispered. "Trust me."

By noon, eight bowls sat in a row on the folding table. One bowl held a mild salsa with corn and black beans. Another held a sweet salsa made with chopped peaches. Mr. Petrakis, the judge, walked slowly from bowl to bowl. He tasted. He nodded. He wrote quietly on his clipboard. Tobias held his breath as the judge reached their bowl.

Mr. Petrakis scooped up a big chip of salsa. He chewed . . . and chewed . . . and stopped. His eyes grew wide. His face turned as red as the tomatoes.

"WATER!" he shouted. "Somebody, please, bring me water!"

Tobias grabbed a pitcher and ran. Mr. Petrakis gulped down two full cups while the neighbors tried hard not to laugh. Then, slowly, he set down his cup. He wiped his forehead. He looked at Tobias and Auntie Fern.

"That," he said in a low, serious voice, "was the boldest salsa I have ever tasted." He paused. "And I would like another bite."

Everyone cheered. Tobias and Auntie Fern did not win first prize, but they took home a shiny ribbon that said Most Daring Salsa. Tobias hung it on the refrigerator that night, right next to the empty pepper jar.
