Morning Chai: A Poem for Two Voices
Read a poem with a partner, matching your pace and voice to each line.
Read the poem with a partner
First read how a poem for two voices works. Then read the poem aloud with a partner two times. The numbers beside the poem show its stanzas.
How to Read a Poem for Two Voices
A poem for two voices is written for two readers. One partner reads every line marked Nani, and the other partner reads every line marked Asha. Lines marked Both are read by the two partners together, at the same time. To sound like one voice, partners must listen to each other and keep the same pace. Words in parentheses, like (yawning), are not read aloud. They tell the reader how to sound. Practice your own part first, and then read the whole poem together.
Morning Chai
1Nani: Wake up, little one. The kitchen is waiting.
Asha (yawning): Five more minutes... maybe ten?
Nani: The pot is out. The spices are out.
Both: It's time for morning chai!
2Nani: I pour cold water into the pot.
Asha: I crush the cardamom pods.
Nani: I slice the ginger, thin as paper.
Asha: Crack! Crack! The little green pods split.
Both: The kitchen smells sweet and warm.
3Nani: The water bubbles,
Asha: bubbles,
Both: bubbles!
Nani: In go the tea leaves, one big spoonful.
Asha: The water turns from clear to gold to brown.
4Nani: Now the milk.
Asha: Now the milk!
Nani: Watch the pot, Asha. Watch it closely.
Asha: It's quiet... it's quiet... it's RISING!
Both: Turn it down! Turn it down!
5Nani (laughing): Just in time, my clever helper.
Asha (proudly): I saw it first, Nani!
Nani: One spoon of sugar for me.
Asha: Two spoons for me, please?
Nani: One and a half.
Both: Deal!
6Nani: I pour the chai through the strainer.
Asha: I hold the cups very still.
Both (softly): Steam curls up. We blow and sip,
Both: slowly, slowly, side by side.
7Nani: Every morning, the same old pot.
Asha: Every morning, the same two cups.
Nani: Someday, you will make the chai,
Asha: and you can watch the pot for me!
Both: Tomorrow, then. Same time.
