About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students compare evacuation solutions using drill results and costs.
  • Students explain how warnings, route signs, and transportation can reduce harm from a volcanic hazard.
  • Students support a safety-plan recommendation with evidence and identify limits of a practice drill.

How to use

Read the planning report together, then have students compare the graph and cost records. Discuss why practice results help planners but cannot guarantee safety.

Planning at Fern Hollow

Fern Hollow is a community beside a tropical rainforest. People gather at its weaving hall to make cloth and teach weaving. A volcano stands beyond the forest. During an eruption, ash and hot volcanic material could harm people in some nearby areas. Local emergency officials marked a meeting site outside the mapped danger area. They also approved a road from the hall to that site.

The weaving group wanted to compare ways to help people leave the hall. Route signs show which turns lead to the meeting site. Loudspeaker alerts tell people when to leave and where to go. A shuttle carries people who need a ride. All four plans used the same signs and approved road. Plan A used signs alone. Plan B added loudspeaker alerts. Plan C added a shuttle instead of alerts. Plan D added both alerts and a shuttle.

Nia helped record a practice drill on a normal, dry day. No eruption was happening. First, the same 24 adult volunteers took their starting places in and around the hall. Next, the team began one plan and started a timer. Some volunteers practiced needing a ride. The team counted how many volunteers reached the meeting site within 20 minutes. Everyone finished the route safely, even if they needed more time. The volunteers rested and returned to the same starting places before trying the next plan.

The team completed one round for each plan. It kept the volunteers, road, starting places, and time limit the same. It changed the alerts and shuttle as described in each plan. Its practice goal was for all 24 volunteers to arrive within 20 minutes. During a real warning, people must follow officials' instructions. Officials may change or close a route as conditions change. The drill's time limit was a planning goal, not a prediction of how much warning an eruption would give.

Compared with signs alone, which addition helped more volunteers arrive within 20 minutes?
  • A. Alerts helped more: 16 is greater than 18.
  • B. Both additions helped equally: each added 6 arrivals.
  • C. The shuttle helped more: it added 8 arrivals, not 6.
  • D. Neither addition helped: both had fewer arrivals than signs alone.
