About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students compare solutions that reduce the effects of flooding on people and places.
  • Students use test results, costs, and safety needs to recommend a flood solution.
  • Students identify evidence and limits when judging a natural-hazard solution.

How to use

Read the station report together, then have students use the graphs and report evidence to compare the solutions and make a recommendation.

Flood-Smart Bike Repair Stations

Compare flood solutions for two community repair spots.

Read the station tests

The community bike shop tested solutions for two temporary repair stations. Use the graphs and the report.

The Two-Station Report

11. The community bike shop planned two outdoor repair stations for neighborhood bike events. The Riverside Lot was near a low part of the street. The Hilltop Park station was on higher ground. The team built equal-sized models of both stations. For each regular test, they poured the same amount of water over a model and measured the water that reached the tool area. A lower number meant less water reached that area.

22. The team tested three choices: no change, a raised platform, and a gravel channel. The platform cost 6 supply points. The channel cost 4 supply points. No change cost 0 points. A platform also needed a short ramp so people could roll bikes onto it. The channel left the repair area at ground level.

33. During a larger-water test, the Riverside platform let 130 milliliters reach the tool area, and the Riverside channel let 160 milliliters reach it. At Hilltop Park, the platform let 95 milliliters reach the tool area, and the channel let 85 milliliters reach it. The team used these results to plan another investigation before building full-size stations.
