Town Talk
SETTING: A small radio studio above the post office in the town of Millbrook. A red ON AIR sign glows over the door. MR. OKAFOR sits at a desk in front of a large microphone. His niece, LUCIA, sits beside him with a stack of note cards.
MR. OKAFOR: (in a slow, calm voice) Good morning, Millbrook! You are listening to Town Talk. I have news about the new crosswalk and the town pool.
LUCIA: (whispering and tapping a card) Uncle Sam, the pool card is on top.
MR. OKAFOR: Thank you, Lucia. The town pool opens on Saturday at noon. (The phone on the desk rings loudly. LUCIA jumps in her seat.)
LUCIA: (covering her mouth) Oops! Should I answer it?
MR. OKAFOR: (nodding and smiling) Go ahead. Callers are part of the show.
LUCIA: (picking up the phone, in a bright, friendly voice) Town Talk, you're on the air!
MRS. BELL: (offstage, sounding worried) This is Rosa Bell on Cedar Lane. My parrot, Pepper, flew out the kitchen window! He is green with a yellow head, and he loves to say, "Hello, friend!"
MR. OKAFOR: (leaning toward the microphone) Listeners, please check the trees on your street for a green parrot.
(Everyone is silent. Then, from outside the window, comes a faint squawk: "Hello, friend!" LUCIA rushes to the window and points.)
LUCIA: (shouting with excitement) He's sitting on the mailbox across the street!
MR. OKAFOR: (laughing) Well, Millbrook, that is the fastest news we have ever had. Mrs. Bell, Pepper is waiting for you at the post office!
