Let the Goats Clear the Hill (by Teodora, Grade 4)
Have you ever tried to climb the steep hill behind Brambleton Park? If you have, you know it is covered with prickly vines, tall weeds and patches of poison ivy. Right now, workers try to clear the hill with loud machines, but the weeds keep growing back, and the rocky slope is hard to work on. I think our town should hire a herd of goats to clear the hill instead.
Goats are the right workers for this job. They eat many kinds of weeds, vines and shrubs, and they can even munch on poison ivy, the plant that makes most people itch. Goats are also skilled climbers. Their hooves help them walk on steep, rocky ground where a mower could slip or tip over. Some towns and parks have already hired goat herds to clear land that is hard to reach.
Goats would also make the park a nicer place for people. Unlike mowers, goats do not burn gas or fill the air with smoke. They are much quieter, too, so neighbors could enjoy peaceful mornings instead of the roar of engines. Best of all, families would get to watch the goats at work. Many children have never seen a goat up close, and seeing a herd munch its way across a hill would be a treat.
The goats can handle the steep slope and the itchy weeds, and they would make Brambleton Park cleaner, quieter and more fun to visit. Please give the goats a chance to clear the hill. I believe our town will be glad it did.
