What Sleep Does for You

Every night, you climb into bed, close your eyes, and fall asleep. It may seem like nothing happens while you sleep, but your body and brain are busy. Without enough sleep, you might feel tired and slow the next day.

First, sleep helps your body grow and rest. Children's bodies do a lot of growing while they sleep. Sleep also gives tired muscles a chance to rest after a long day of running, jumping, and playing.

Sleep helps your brain, too. During the day, you learn many new things, like spelling words and math facts. While you sleep, your brain sorts through what you learned and helps you remember it. A good night's sleep before a spelling test can help you remember the words.

Sleep also helps you feel your best. When people do not get enough sleep, they may feel grumpy or cranky. They may have trouble paying attention in class. After a good night's rest, it is easier to stay calm and focus on your work.

Sleep even helps your body fight germs. When you are sick, you may feel extra sleepy. Resting gives your body the energy it needs to fight off germs and get well.

Your body and brain do important work while you sleep. Sleep helps your body and brain stay healthy. So tonight, when it is time for bed, remember that sleep is not wasted time!
