Beavers: Busy Builders
Beavers are busy builders. They live near streams and ponds, and they use things they find nearby to make a safe home. A beaver does not need any tools. Its own body does the work.
A beaver's sharp front teeth can cut through small trees. Then the beaver drags the branches to the water. It also uses its front paws to carry mud. Sticks and mud are its building materials.
First, beavers build a dam across a stream. They pile sticks in a row and pack mud into the gaps. The dam slows the water down, and a deep pond forms behind it.
Next, the beavers build a lodge in the pond. A lodge is a dome made of sticks and mud. A beaver family lives inside. The door is under the water, so it is hard for other animals to reach. The room inside stays dry.
Beavers also watch for danger. When a beaver sees something scary, it slaps its flat tail on the water. The loud smack warns the other beavers that danger is near.
