How Stonebridge Began and Grew
Stonebridge began beside the Bluewater River. In 1880, travelers moving between two inland communities often stopped at a shallow place where wagons could cross. A few families built homes near the crossing. A ferry operator carried people and goods when the water was too deep. A small store opened nearby. These homes, the ferry, and the store formed the beginning of the town.
In 1890, local leaders arranged for a bridge to be built. Wagons could cross in every season, so more travelers came through Stonebridge. A blacksmith shop and a small hotel opened near the bridge. The town had more businesses than it had at the start.
A schoolhouse opened in 1910. In 1930, electric lines reached Stonebridge. Streetlights went up, and homes and businesses could use electric power. These services made the town a more useful place for families.
In 1950, a paved road connected Stonebridge to a larger city. Travel became easier, and more families moved into the town. New homes and shops appeared beside the older buildings.
In 1970, the river rose during a flood. Afterward, residents built a levee to help protect the town. By 1990, the old ferry landing had become a public park, and the bridge had been repaired. Stonebridge now had historic buildings beside newer neighborhoods. The town grew as travel, services, and jobs changed, and it changed as residents responded to problems and made new choices.
