Cattail Crossing Through Time
In 1856, three families stopped beside a clear spring in a broad valley. Two wagon trails crossed nearby. The spring gave travelers fresh water, and the trails made it possible to reach farms and markets. The families built cabins and called their settlement Cattail Crossing after the tall plants growing near the spring.
At first, Cattail Crossing was a small place with a blacksmith shop, a general store, and a few homes. In 1884, workers found useful limestone in a nearby hill. A quarry opened, and more workers and their families moved to town. A short rail line carried stone to larger cities. New homes, shops, and a school appeared near the station.
The town continued to grow after a paved road reached Cattail Crossing in 1911. Trucks brought supplies, and farmers used the road to take crops to market. By 1930, the town had a doctor, a larger school, and several stores.
The quarry closed in 1948 after the easiest stone had been removed. Some families left to find quarry work elsewhere, but the town did not disappear. In the 1970s, rain filled part of the old quarry, and residents turned the area into a pond and walking trail. The train station later became a small history center. Cattail Crossing still has its spring and crossroads, but its work and public places have changed.
