About this worksheet
What students practice
- Students compare measured positions to identify a repeating motion pattern.
- Students use a motion pattern to predict an object's future position and direction.
- Students explain how new observations can change a motion prediction.
How to use
Read the camping setup together and trace the zipper's motion with a finger. Have students use the records to make predictions and explain their evidence.
Curriculum
NGSS standard covered
Observe and measure an object's motion to find a pattern that predicts how it will move next.

Sleeping-Bag Zipper Motion Check
Measure a zipper pull's motion and use its pattern to predict what comes next.

1. Study the First Motion Check
Read the setup. Use the graph to follow the zipper pull, not the whole sleeping bag.
A Gear Check at Camp
On a camping trip, Amara helps check a sleeping bag before bedtime. The bag lies flat on a ground cloth. A measuring strip runs beside its straight zipper. The strip's 0-centimeter mark is near the foot of the bag. Larger numbers are farther toward the head of the bag.
An adult gently moves the zipper pull back and forth between the 0-centimeter and 28-centimeter marks. Amara uses a timer and reads the center of the pull every second. She keeps the strip and sleeping bag in the same places. She watches from beside the bag and keeps her fingers away from the moving pull.
For the first check, the adult uses a repeating rhythm. The pull travels directly between the recorded positions without extra turns. It pauses at the far end, but turns back right away at the 0-centimeter mark. Amara watches three full trips and finds that their measurements match. The graph shows the first trip. For predictions about this check, suppose the same rhythm continues.
How much farther toward the head of the bag was the pull at 3 seconds than at 1 second? cm
