About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students use timed position observations to identify a repeating motion pattern.
  • Students use measured motion patterns to predict positions and numbers of turns.
  • Students compare two designs using evidence from their motion records.

How to use

Read the setup together and trace Fan A's motion in the air. Have students use both records to make predictions and explain their design choice.

Curriculum

Slow-Fan Designs for a Mountain Trail Shelter

Use motion records to compare two designs and predict their next moves.

1. Follow the Marked Blade

Read the setup and Fan A's record. Use the recorded pattern for your predictions.

Testing a Shelter Display

A mountain-trail crew is planning a motion display for a rest shelter. Visitors will watch a bright spot travel around on a fan blade. The crew compares two small, battery-powered fan designs, A and B. These model fans turn slowly for the display. They are not being tested for cooling people.

An adult places each fan behind a clear cover. Anika watches without touching the fans. She faces each fan and starts its bright spot at the top. Both fans turn clockwise: from top to right, then bottom, then left, and back to top. One full turn brings the spot back to the top.

Anika keeps each fan's setting unchanged during its test. She uses the same timer and starting position. For Fan A, she records the spot's position every 4 seconds. For Fan B, she counts completed full turns every 6 seconds. She does not count part of a turn as a completed turn.

The records below show her observations. For predictions, suppose each fan keeps repeating its recorded motion pattern with no change to its setting.

Fan A: Time → Position of Bright Spot
0 seconds → top
4 seconds → right
8 seconds → bottom
12 seconds → left
16 seconds → top
20 seconds → right
24 seconds → bottom
28 seconds → left
32 seconds → top
1.
How long does Fan A take to make one full turn?
  • A. 4 seconds
  • B. 8 seconds
  • C. 16 seconds
  • D. 32 seconds
