Build a Pizza Box Solar Oven
Did you know that sunlight can cook food? On a hot, sunny day, you can build a small oven that uses the sun's heat instead of a stove. It will not get as hot as a kitchen oven, but it can melt chocolate on a cracker.
What You Need
a clean pizza box, aluminum foil, black paper, clear plastic wrap, tape, scissors, a ruler, a paper plate, an oven mitt, and a snack
How to Build It
Step 1: Ask an adult to help you cut a flap in the lid of the box. Cut along three sides of a square, and leave the fourth side attached so the flap can fold up.
Step 2: Cover the inside of the flap with foil, shiny side out. Smooth out the wrinkles and tape down the edges.
Step 3: Tape plastic wrap tightly over the hole in the lid to make a window. Make sure there are no gaps where warm air can leak out.
Step 4: Tape black paper to the bottom of the box.
How to Use It
Step 5: Put your snack on the paper plate, set it inside the box, and close the lid.
Step 6: Place the oven in a sunny spot. Use the ruler to prop the flap open so the foil shines sunlight through the window.
Step 7: Check your snack often. When the chocolate is soft, use the oven mitt to lift out the plate, because it may be hot.
Why It Works
The shiny foil reflects, or bounces, sunlight into the box. The black paper soaks up the light and turns it into heat. The plastic window lets sunlight in and traps the warm air inside. That is why the oven works best on a bright, sunny day.
